There are two ways to use filters a) screw on and b) with a filter kit

Both methods rely on your lens having a ‘filter thread’ for the filter or kit to attach to. For a screw on filter, you need to obtain a filter of the correct size. This filter diameter needs to match the diameter of your lens. In addition, your lens also needs to have a thread to screw on the filter. Here are a few ways to check what the diameter of your lens:

  1. Often in the product description there will be two descriptions of size. For instance : Canon 16-35mm F2.8II lens, 82mm. The 82mm refers to the filter diameter which should not be confused with the focal length measurement of 16-35mm.
  2. On the lens itself , there may be an annotation using the Greek symbol ϕ. This indicates the diameter of the lens.
  3. If you cannot find the appropriate information and your lens is not marked, then use calipers to measure the maximum distance across the inner edge of your lens’ front element.

For filter kits, knowing the diameter of your lens allows you to know if a) your filter kit’s adapter ring will screw directly onto the lens b) what size ‘step up’ ring you will need in order to place the filter’ adapter ring on to your lens. For example , the NiSi 100mm system has an 82mm adapter ring. If your lens has a diameter of 77mm, you will need to attach the 77mm step up ring first, the 82mm adapter ring next, followed by the filter kit itself.
