UV filter
Advantage:
Blocks UV light which may marginally improve quality of images
Can protect the front element of a lens from minor trauma /damage
Disadvantage:
Can inadvertently block light acting as a very weak ND filter
Can cause additional lens flare when shooting into direct light
NiSi UHD UV for Fujifilm X100 Series
NiSi Ti UV
Circular Polariser
Advantage:
Can reduce glare and reflections in the correct orientation
Can improve natural colour saturation of a RAW image
Effects cannot be easily reproducible in post processing
Can inadvertently block light acting as a very weak ND filter
Disadvantage:
Can cause additional lens flare when shooting into direct light
NiSi Ti Enhance CPL
Neutral Density
Advantage:
Blocks light and therefore increases the shutter speed required for a given scene
Creates effects that are not easily replicable in post processing (even with ‘average’ stacking methods)
Screw on versions will often not allow a filter holder kit to be attached
Disadvantage:
Screw on versions may cause some vignetting especially if stacked with a circular polariser on a wide angle lens
Can cause additional lens flare when shooting into direct light
NiSi PRO Nano Enhance ND-VARIO
Graduated Neutral Density
Advantage:
Blocks light from part of a scene (eg. bright sky) thereby evening out the exposure across an entire scene
Assists in controlling dynamic range of a scene therefore allowing images to be taken as a ‘single shot’
Effects are reproducible largely in post processing but requires multiple exposures to be taken and post processing skill to recreate the same effect
Disadvantage:
Screw on versions should be avoided as the transition from dark to light cannot be adjusted
Can cause additional lens flare when shooting into direct light
